HighScope Training Courses for Childminders
The HighScope in the Family Day Care Setting Course
HighScope sees the home as a rich learning environment, in which the childminder has a key role. Childminders develop relationships with children that can last from birth through to early adolescence, so they have a vital contribution to make to the learning development of children. HighScope recognises the professionalism of childminders and seeks to develop their expertise through this course.
The course has been developed jointly by practising childminders and staff at HighScope GB. It is recommended by the National Childminding Association and meets the requirements of its Quality Childminding Charter for children's learning and development. The course provides underpinning knowledge for NVQ level 3.
The course offers childminders ideas for:
- Providing a planned programme of learning
- Creating daily routines with children
- Organising the home as a learning environment
- Supporting children in being independent learners
- Helping children to learn from one another
- Developing children's thinking, mathematical and language skills
- Sharing information with parents about their children's progress
Our trainers have a thorough working knowledge of childminding, based on their own extensive experience. Each session offers a range of stimulating activities that make learning enjoyable. These include focused discussions, video screenings and practical activities.
The course comprises eight sessions of 2.5 hours each. Areas covered include: Active Learning, the Learning Environment, the Daily Routine, Plan-Do-Review, the Role of the Adult (Communication and Interaction), the Child and Family, Key Experiences, and Observation and Record Keeping. Each participant receives an assignment file, study guide and set of parent booklets. Participants are required to attend all the sessions and complete 'light touch' assignments and reading.
The course gives childminders the opportunity to meet in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, to develop their professional expertise and to share ideas, issues and achievements.
